What inspires you to…
- Take a risk?
- Be creative?
- Be a better spouse?
- Be bold?
Put whatever you want into the last part of that question. You may need to think on it for just a bit. Well, what is it? I can tell you for me, there are many things that inspire me. It depends on the circumstance or the mood I am in. It can be a song, it could be something I read, maybe a movie I am watching, a conversation I had with someone or that still small voice. Inspiration may not come immediately. Sometimes it does but it may come a little while after your encounter. It may come in a quiet moment when you are reflecting back on things. So, what do you do with inspiration once it comes? I think many of us don’t really know what to do next. Does that sound like you? If it does then read on.
“Inspiration may not come immediately.”
Inspiration is important. If it weren’t for inspiration we would probably still be living our lives by candlelight and walking everywhere we went. Don’t get me wrong, some people to choose to live that way and that isn’t wrong. That is a choice. I sometimes daydream about living off the grid. I think it would be cool. That is, until I had to find food. I came across an interesting show on PBS one night about a guy who did just that. I won’t rabbit trail off on that but you can click here if you are interested in getting a glimpse of that.
What I am referring to is progress. Some might argue that progress has led to the demise of our world. Maybe it has but I’m not a fatalist. Just like anything else progress comes with both positive and negative aspects. Feel free to weigh in on that in the comment section.
In my mind inspiration and progress go hand-in-hand. We have to be inspired to step out into uncomfortable situations from time to time in order to grow. We don’t just decide to be a better “whatever”; something inspires us to take that step. Once we are inspired it is our job to respond.
It is important to not let your inspiration just dissolve. Let me offer these “next steps” when you are inspired to do something.
- Write down the inspiration or idea
- Note what the end result looks like in your mind
- Write down any obstacles you foresee and how they can be overcome
- Jot down steps that are necessary to put this into action
- Pray about your inspiration and listen for that still small voice
Now it is time to take the next step. Yes, it may be uncomfortable. Henry Ford stepped out of his comfort zone and look what happened. Depending on how you look at it he either helped society progress into the modern era or he is the person responsible for gridlock on our roads. Regardless, it is up to you to take the next step…
