I’m not a doomsday kind of guy and I’m not a “the sky is falling” type of person. I am a Christian man that believes the bible. I emphatically believe the bible is true, offers encouragement and teaching and gives us insight into things that have happened and events that will occur in the future.
The bible tells us in the book of Matthew the signs of the end of the age. In other words, things that will happen to signify the end is near. Scripture gives prophecy of things to come. I had a chance to touch on this when I spoke at Oasis Church a few weeks ago and it is worth sharing here with you. Continue reading
In a previous life I worked in the automotive industry. I remember being on a particular business trip where I got to hang out with a large number of people. Some of the people I knew but most I had never met before. On several occasions a handful of people mentioned they had heard I was a pastor. It is interesting to me how and when this comes up in conversation. I often wonder how that comes up about me when I’m not involved in the discussion.
The conversation usually goes the same way every time. They ask me what church I am a part of and what denomination we belong to. That is usually followed by a comment like, “I used to go to church but I don’t anymore” or “I was raised in church but haven’t gone in years”. I perk up at these comments because I have done quite a bit of research on why people leave church and I am always interested to know why they stopped going. This is the turning point in the conversation for me. Continue reading
I love sports. I have played all kinds of sports since I was five or six years old. Growing up in Southern California I was a devoted Angels baseball fan and Rams football fan. I’m still a devoted Angels fan but lost interest in the Rams shortly after they left California. Who knows, maybe we will get the Rams back in Southern California after all. There has been a lot of talk about that lately.
Loyalty is a big deal to me. It always has been. Being a sports fan I have found it hard to understand the lack of loyalty on behalf of players and team owners alike. Over the years Continue reading
I saw this sign today and it brought a smile to my face. It reminded me of a yellow Labrador Retriever we had when we lived in the state of Washington several years ago. His name was Winston and he was one of the best dogs we had ever had.
One memory that always jumps to the front of my mind when I think about Winston is the time he literally protected our kids from certain demise when an overly protective mother cow thought the kids were too close to her baby.
We lived in Washington State at the time on a forty-acre plot of land that was owned by this really nice couple. And on this land they had a herd of longhorn cattle. We only had two kids at this time and they were standing at the fence looking at the cows when one of the cows began to charge the fence. Continue reading
I write a lot about passions. I have a lot of them. One of the passions I have is music. I love music. Always have. Now, I’m not a musical person. I don’t play any instruments, unless you count drumming on the table. When I was a kid I played the piano. I was pretty good at it but at seven years old the piano was kind of boring to me.
When I was a teenager I wanted to be in a band. I loved music so much and the sound of the era I grew up in. It gave me this great feeling that I wanted everybody else to experience. I wanted to share that passion. But, that never happened.
My musical tastes changed over the years, as I’m sure it did for a lot of you. Does anyone remember Continue reading
I had a bit of scare this week. Well, maybe more of a “what was I thinking?” moment.
Our sons and a friend were using the jacuzzi one Saturday night. As is typical when the spa is used the water level recedes quite a bit. This happens when people get in and out of the jacuzzi a lot as well as evaporation. When I got up Sunday morning I noticed the water level was lower than normal. So, to help the auto-fill process along I put the hose in the spa for a few minutes before we left for church. The water level was so low it didn’t make much of a dent. So I turned off the water and away we went to church.
When we got home from lunch after church the low water level was still low and was bugging me! So I turned the hose back on. A while later we took off for my son’s ballgame. Continue reading
“Like a good neighbor…” I can hear the jingle of that popular insurance company TV commercial in my head.
We have had three new families move into our neighborhood over the past year or so. We have made it a point to introduce ourselves and welcome them to the neighborhood. They seem like nice people and by all accounts they seem like they will fit right in to our neighborhood dynamic. Continue reading
Some people like to hit golf balls, some people like to read and some people like to surf. Me, I like to work out. Cross training, specifically. Over the past couple of years it has become a discipline in my life and part of my daily routine. If I miss a day I feel out of kilter…like I’ve cheated…like I’ve called in sick when I’m not really sick. Do you know the feeling? I was thinking about this recently and it got me thinking about my life as a Christian. Kind of a weird comparison but I am amazed at how similar physically conditioning your body and being a Christian are. Continue reading
